Synoptic Overview of the Social Security System in Uruguay

Abstract

The article presents in condensed form the main features of the Uruguayan social security system, reviewing their origins, historical development and current status. The panorama includes exposure of the institutional organization of the system and the benefits that are served by emphasizing the general characteristics of the mixed pension system, introduced in the mid-nineties, which has recently been modified as a result of social dialogue on the social security system, including the possibility of disaffiliation and similar options as well as the incorporation of alternatives that can help make the retreat with the activity is highlighted. Finally, trends and prospects of the system are outlined.
