Social Security fraud in times of crisis

Abstract

This article deals with the combat against Social Security fraud. It is an issue of growing relevance in the current context of economic crisis. From a broad perspective, the article analyzes the diverse types of Social Security fraud that concerns evaded contributions, inaccurate spending of welfare benefits and unfair business practices. Attention is also drawn to the sort of actions used by public authorities in order to reduce fraud, including preventive and punitive measures. The second part treats of the actions brought about in this area since 2012, focusing on legal changes and institutional cooperation. Stressed is made on the new policy's orientation against Social Security fraud and those aspects that need to be corrected.
