Comparative Analysis of Contribution-Based Pension Financing and Retirement Age: The Case of Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and Sweden
Keywords:
Social security, European Union, social policy, retirement age, pension systemAbstract
This study reviews employee and employer contribution-based pension financing and retirement age in five EU countries: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and Sweden. It compares similarities and differences in how pensions are financed and the applicable retirement ages. Spain operates a pay-as-you-go system with most contributions from employers; retirement age in 2025 will be 66 years and eight months after at least 15 years of contributions, including two immediately prior to retirement. In Sweden, employees can make individual savings through banks or insurance companies, forming a third pension pillar. In general, these systems provide comprehensive coverage from the beginning of working life through retirement.
