Abstract

The classification of permanent disabilities for the purpose of recognising a contributory benefit raises a series of issues in the field of Social Jurisdiction. And there are two reasons why such issues are made all the more acute when the illnesses to take into account in order to determine the level of severity turn out to be mental. One relates to the specific details that typify mental illnesses and that differentiate them from other illnesses. The other comes from the stigmatisation associated with mental illness, which was undoubtedly worse in years gone by, but which to some extent persists and does not look likely to disappear any time soon.
