Abstract

There is in Simone Weil a point of intersection between political commitment and mystical experience, which constitutes a feature of Weil’s originality, especially considering the time in which she lived. This will be a significant part of her legacy for the generations that succeeded her up to the present. Simone Weil positioned herself politically and publicly with respect to the great social causes, issues and dilemmas of the society of her time. Her stance is not limited to intellectual work, but also reaches the active commitment, through the trade union struggle, the active struggle for a more authentic democracy, for more democratic forms of factory organizations (rejecting the conditions of exploitation, commodification and dehumanization of work) and all this reaffirming human dignity and reciprocal duties between human beings. The centrality of work - of Franciscan dynamism for work - is not necessarily an evil in itself. It admits the centrality of work in the development of the individual creator and sharer in the community. Weil does not speak only of cultural work, but above all of physical -manual- work, not the work proper to intellectuals and the educated: he calls it a grace to be accepted and fulfilled with recognition: something natural, to which one must submit with humility.
